BODRUM |
The history of Bodrum, known as Halicarnassus or Halicarnassos goes back to the 13th century BC. Excavaties reveal the 5000 year old history of this town. It is a charming and fascinating little port, 270 km. south of Izmir, on the Aegean coast of
Turkey. The new airport Milas-Bodrum, is now is fully connected. Scheduled Turkish Airlines and International charter flights are now arriving regularly. The long transfer from Izmir or Dalaman now belongs to the past.
The inhabitants of Bodrum are around 30.000 and earn their living by fishing, boat-building, agriculture, weaving (the village Mumcular is famous for its carpets, kilims and other weavings) and tourism, which has become the most important industry in the last few years. In recent times Bodrum has become not only a tourist center but also a visiting place for famous Turkish and foreign artists and also an art center, which is a source of inspiration.
The heart of the town is around the harbor, where shops, bars and restaurants jostle together in the narrow streets under the shadow of the St. Peter Castle of which origins date back to the knights of St. John in the 1400’s. |

The main artery is Cumhuriyet Caddesi (Republic Street), much better known as bar street.This street is a pedestrianized showcase of what the town has to offer. Skilled artisans can make you a pair of snugly fitting leather sandals in the traditional Aegean style, while small boutiques offer stylish creations inspired by local designs and fabrics.

BODRUM MARINAS
Since the time of King Mausolos Bodrum has been an important center for boat building. Ptolemäus from Egypt had his warships made here in 300 BC. The marinas in and around Bodrum are Milta Marina, Turgutreis Dmarin and Yalikavak Port Bodrum.

AROUND BODRUM
Turgutreis
Turgutreis is located 18 km. from Bodrum and at the west point of the Bodrum peninsula and the second largest residental area after Bodrum. It is a modern Mediterranean town covered by nature; Begonvilles, oleanders and many other colorful plants and endless oil groves, gardens of citrus fruits. This coastal town has brilliant sea and islands as famous as its history and naturel beauty.The endless blue waters embracing Turgutreis is adorned with 14 islands seems like green spots placed by the nature. Gümbet
Only 2-3 km away from Bodrum this place recently became almost a resort unto itself. Gümbet (named after Kümbet - these numerous white-domed cisterns in the area) features one of the longest and most popular beaches on the peninsula. Gümbet is also one of the most popular water sports centers with water-skiing, windsurfing, parasailing, etc. available.

Bitez
Bitez lies 7 km west of Bodrum, in the bay next to Gumbet. The winds here are particularly favorable for windsurfing and several water sports operators are based here. The beach is sandy, with plenty of sunloungers and umbrellas for sunbathing,
Away from the beach it is possible to wander through mandarin orange groves where oxen plough and life continues as before.
The village itself is a 15 minute walk, or short drive, inland and remains totally unspoiled by tourism.

Turkbuku and Golkoy
These two fishing villages we will mention in one, because they are close to eachother. You find them on the peninsula map east of Yalikavak. These delightful spots are the favorite retreats of many well-known Turkish artists, actors and entertainers who enliven the many small bars and restaurants at night. Several of the more popular restaurants are run by Istanbul couples who have fled the big city. |

Torba
This little village is hiding in a charming little bay. Heading North of Bodrum Torba is the nearest village. It is only active during the summer months, but due to the generally high quality of the holiday home developments is a pleasant and relaxed place to visit.
There are also the remains of a Byzantine monastery, and nearby is a small path leading to the next bay, which is ideal for a little light walking.

Yalıkavak
Yalikavak lies at the north-west corner of the Bodrum Peninsula, 17 km or 10 miles from Bodrum and used to be a fishing and sponge divers village. The permanent inhabitants of Yalikavak number around 6, 800 people. This fertile coastal region is ideal for sailing and all water sports and attracts many foreign yachts to the harbour that once sheltered mainly fishing boats. |
